Upon leaving Venice, the first port on our Viking cruise itinerary was Split. Being on the starboard side of the ship, we got the first glimpse of Split when we went to breakfast.

We were scheduled to be in Split, one of Croatia’s oldest cities, for 10 hours. We started with a group walking tour arranged by Viking. We met our local guide at the dock. From there, we made our way to the walled city. It is a combination of preserved remains with a modern city built around it.

We visited Diocletian’s Palace. There was a dome where a group of vocalists sang traditional music that echoed throughout the opening.

Our guide pointed out different parts of the wall still intact. Fascinating how a modern city with shops and apartments seamlessly blends into the ancient city walls.

Our guide also pointed out some of the main squares along the way.

When the tour ended, we decided to grab a snack. We moved on from pizza and pasta in Venice. The food focus for the next couple of days was to find the best spinach pie. In Croatia it is called burek (borek in English). Phil, from the TV show Somebody Feel Phil, went to ST Burek when he visited Croatia. They were out of spinach and cheese. So, we ordered one slice of the cheese pie to share. I didn’t know it at the time, but this was my favorite one of the trip. The flaky pastry dough was layered with a local white cheese similar in taste and texture to feta. It was the perfect “snack” before we climbed to the top of the bell tower.

We purchased a ticket to climb the 180 steps to the top of the bell tower.

The view was worth the climb!

We went back onboard the Viking ship to enjoy the view of Split before setting sail for Dubrovnik.

Next stop: Dubrovnik, Croatia!
Check out the rest of our Viking cruise adventures! Here is what we did at the other stops: Venice, Split, Kotor, Corfu, Katakolon (Olympia), and Athens.
Question: We covered a lot of ground in a few hours. What did we miss in Split?
