Here are some things to do within two hours driving distance from the DC area.
Note: this page will not list every place that I ever went to. I will continue to update these links with new information so come back often!
Within one hour of the DC area
Glenstone, a private contemporary art museum 15 miles from downtown DC in Potomac, MD. A pastoral setting that integrates art, architecture, and nature. We spent close to two hours walking along the trails admiring the outdoor exhibits and two indoor museums.
An hour or more outside of the DC area
Annapolis recommendations: take a boat ride on the Chesapeake Bay, walk around the Naval Academy, exploring the downtown area near the waterfront to shop and eat.
Baltimore recommendation: Book a 45-minute Watermark Harbor Cruise with a recorded narration of the city’s history. In May of 2019, we celebrated my parents 40th wedding anniversary so we added on a champagne toast and the crew gave them a shoutout before taking off.

St. Michael’s recommendation: If you can swing it, stay at the Inn at Perry Cabin. We have not done that yet, however, in November 2020 we enjoyed exploring the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (which is mostly outdoors), walking around the downtown to shop, and a crab cake sandwich for lunch at Foxy’s Harbor Grill.
Hiking Recommendations:
Catoctin Mountain (Cunningham Falls Nature Trail) and Springfield Manor Winery, Distillery, Brewery in Thurmont, MD
Maryland Heights Trail in Harpers Ferry National Park encompasses 22 miles of trails across the states of West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland. We drove to the Harpers Ferry train station in West Virginia and then covered a little over 6 miles roundtrip hiking.
