This marks my fifth visit to Mexico and my first visit to the capital city. Only two of my prior trips to Mexico are recent enough to make an appearance on @champagneonplanes. Our favorite beach resort vacation was a trip to Playa del Carmen in 2019. The food, the drinks, the hotel, the scenery, and the ease of travel from the Washington, D.C. area make Mexico a prime destination. While everyone is going to the beach this time of year, we love exploring cities. We booked four nights and three days in Mexico City to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary!

Mexico City is one of the largest cities in the world. It’s abbreviated CDMX in Spanish. The city is known for lots of traffic and a large population. It is also famous for having some of the best food in the world. There are many historical sites, modern architecture, and neighborhoods to explore. At first it reminded me of Buenos Aires, Argentina. But I changed my mind. I don’t think there is a direct comparison. CDMX stands out on its own.

We spent most of our time walking around the city exploring markets and checking out museums. Here are some highlights.
I swapped champagne for mezcal this trip and it did not disappoint. I have a feeling a margarita will not taste the same after the CDMX mezcaleritas.

The markets near the historic city center and Coyoacan had plenty of souvenirs to search for.

We visited four museums in three days.

Check out my Mexico City page to read more about our adventures. Discover where we stayed and what we did. Find out where we ate all the tacos, tostados, and mezcal cocktails.
