If given the option to head to the beach or the desert, I would choose the desert, as long as it isn’t June, July, August, or September. There is something about the desert that keeps me coming back – lots of sunshine and blue skies, lack of humidity, cactus and palm trees, and tacos to name a few. This is our third desert vacation in three years – we previously visited Scottsdale, AZ and Palm Springs, CA for a few days of tennis and rest & relaxation in the desert and knew we wanted to continue exploring other desert towns where we could play tennis, relax at the pool, and explore the local area. This trip was no different except instead of visiting in May when the temperature was already over 100 degrees daily, we got to experience the cool mornings and evenings before the temperature reached the mid 70s during the day. That is ideal tennis and tourist weather if you ask me.
We loved Scottsdale when we visited in 2021 and decided to go back to the Phoenix area for President’s Day weekend since there is a direct flight from Washington, DC where we could arrive in time for lunch on Friday and fly out Monday morning to make it back to the East Coast late afternoon. While it was tempting to go back and repeat our same itinerary from 2021, I found the Wigwam located 19 miles west of Phoenix in Litchfield Park and it checked all the boxes for what we were looking for in a long weekend desert getaway.
Here are some of the highlights from our long weekend in the Arizona desert:
Palm tree and cactus views at the Wigwam in Litchfield Park

Daily tennis and a spa day at the Wigwam

Exploring the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix

Head on over to my full recap to see where we stayed, where we ate and what we explored in Litchfield Park (and Phoenix), Arizona.
