Here are some things to do within two hours driving distance from the DC area.
Note: this page will not list every place that I ever went to. I will continue to update these links with new information so come back often!
Great Falls National Park in Fairfax, VA
There are several options for walking and hiking trails. We usually park at the visitor’s center near the waterfalls and stick to the River or Ridge trails depending on how crowded it is. We last visited in December 2020.
Harper’s Ferry Brewing in Purcellville, VA
When you approach Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia from Virginia you pass Harper’s Ferry Brewing. Great post hike spot for local craft beers, outdoor seating, and awesome views, even on a cold day in January 2021.
Manassas National Battlefield in Manassas, VA
We visited in January of 2021 during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Located 20 miles west of Falls Church, the park has over 40 miles of trails to explore. We opted for the First Manassas Trail, which is a 5.4 mile trail through forested areas, farm fields, woods, and an open battlefield area near the main Visitor’s Center. We started the hike at the parking lot for the Stone Bridge Loop trail.
George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate on the banks of the Potomac River. Go for the 4th of July celebration.
Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah National Park
A very popular hike with rock scrambles and incredible views. Requires planning to ensure you get one of the limited parking spaces and get there before there are lines to get through some of the scrambles and narrow passages.
Potomac Overlook Regional Park in Arlington, VA
Tucked in a neighborhood in Arlington, VA this scenic park offers four relatively easy trails with views of the Potomac River and Washington Monument.
State Theatre, Falls Church, VA (Bind Melon, May 2018, Sam Grow, Jan 2019)
